Training while in a less-than-optimal state (or how to survive violence with Murphy's blessings)

Hey guys, shit happens when you don't expect it, and like that bastard Murphy says, what can go wrong will go wrong at the worst possible time. So, suppose you're sick with the flu, have an injury (like an injured knee, a tendinitis or any other joyful bodily expression of over training with little regard to your safety - Kinda like the idiotic me in the past ;) ) or have a cold (like me right now), what will you do if you need to fight for your life? Training with injuries/ while sick might not be for everyone, but we at Senshido believe that you should at least try to run a couple of scenarios to see how you move/ react/ feel while incapacitated, either solo or with one or more trusted partners.

Your objective is to see and feel and understand the limitations sickness or injuries will impose on your combat capabilities, be it psychological, emotional, behavioral, or physical. You wanna de-escalate when you're having a sore throat? Maybe it will amuse the three hoodlums who'll something to the extend that some of their bodily fluid might fix your condition (They're lying of course haha!). Awareness and evasion capabilities will also be diminished while you're in this sorry state.

In case you don't wanna risk further injuries, you can play it safe and simulate a handicap (the infamous handicap drill) and tie your hand up, put a few marbles in your shoes, etc to see how you could protect yourself if the shit hits the fan. Suddenly, grappling and ground fighting aren't so hot, especially when you're sneezing every 10 seconds and your nose is running. Jumping around and displaying great footwork will never feel the same if your knee is tightly bandaged (not too tight and never for longer than 10 minutes! you really don't want to risk developing a blood clot, trust me on that one!), and your knife defense really sucks now that you only have one arm to use (Tip: You can anchor on the baddie using your teeth :D)

Well, that was the pearl of the day, I need to take my cold medicine now and get some rest if I want to heal fast :( God damn it, never ever smoke a Cuban cigar if your throat starts feeling sore and wash it down with lots of booze. Oh yeah, booze... If you're the kind of guy/ gal that drinks a lot, try doing a scenario (AT HOME, ALONE PREFERABLY WITH NO FRIEND TO TAPE YOUR "EXPLOITS" AND YOUTUBE THEM HAHA!) and see how your reaction time is increased (bad) and your footwork/ mobility is impaired, and other useless things.
